Your Tax Dollars at Work (against YOU!)

Special education legal fees for outside counsel for January 2010 totaled $88,947. The year to-date total of $462,126 is $100,117 (28 percent) higher than the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Total year-to-date special education legal costs of $463,632 are $124,629 (37 percent), higher than the budgeted amount of $339,003.
Jeffrey A. Krew had charges of $85,197 in January, including work on ten cases, five of which involved administrative hearings ($59,217) and three of which are on appeal in state or federal court ($1,780) and two cases related to participation in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings ($3,750). In addition, there was a $24,200 adjustment to the per diem hearing rate for the 2009 calendar year in accordance with the contract approved by the Board of Education.
Carney Kelehan had charges of $3,750 in January involving participation in the preparation of four individual education programs.
