Triangle loom weaving

I've been so obsessively weaving on my new 3' triangle loom that I haven't had time to do almost any knitting or spinning, both of which I really need to get done. I'm about 1/2 done with my kimono sweater, had to reorder yarn for the slow-bee shawl knit-along (which started this last week so I'll be at least a week behind) when my first yarn turned out to have been sold knotted in the skein. I wasn't willing to hand-wind and untangle 1533 yards of black lace weight merino/silk yarn, go figure; I didn't even bother to check the second or third skeins I bought, I'm just returning them all. They're being replaced by the seller (Woodland Woolworks, who are wonderful) with a coned tencel lace weight yarn, and I'll probably use the rest of my $$ credit to buy some recycled silk or rayon for my wonderful new loom.

So far I've woven a black and grey scarf for mom; 2 grey wool (yummy) triangles I'm going to seam and embroider for myself in shades of white, grey, and blue; and now this great ladder yarn scarf:

I know, somehow the lighting gets way off when I import into blogger, so here's stitch detail, with slightly better photography and color definition:

Really, the colors are brighter jewel tones, but this will have to do. It's lovely and drapey, and the kids say I should send it to Aunt Hedy.

Notes from a Soggy Weekend

It is wet. Wet as a frog's bathtub. A ducky paradise. Boy is it wet.

For Mother's Day, Tirtze and Gilad gave me cards they picked out with Oma; Kayla made me a card and gave me a little crystal rose she had saved from a friend's bas mitzvah. We went over to Mom and Dad's for a little brunch. Our gift to Mom was the first scarf I made on my ever-wonderful new 3' triangle loom, done in a fuzzy black, grey and white wool/acrylic blend. It is quite lovely and she seems to like it.

My other weaving on the loom includes 2 grey wool triangles which I hope to seam and then embroider in whites, greys, and blues; and the piece I'm working on now which is difficult but wonderful: a jewel-toned ladder yarn. Kayla has suggested I give this to Aunt Hedy, since Kayla insists it's beautiful but that I don't usually wear such bright jewel tones. Ladder yarns when woven look like strung beads, so I can't wait to take it off the loom; I'll try to be sure to take photos.

In other fibery news, Interweave's Piecework magazine published a pattern for filet crochet based on historical research of Laura Ingalls Wilder's life and works; it's a large doily or dresser scarf with birds on a branch (note to anyone considering working the piece: there are pattern corrections to the symbol listing). I don't do filet crochet (well, I could, I suppose, but I haven't crocheted in years and I just don't have time to start something else new), so I just cut the article and pattern out and mailed it to Julie; maybe she has a friend who can replicate it for her.

Everyone at home has a bit of a cold or virus; runny noses and sore throats. Addie seems to have had it first and is feeling better already; I'm still feeling a bit miserable and run-down but it's not too nasty. Feivel had bug bites from Friday and was convinced he had chicken pox again; not only that, but he was checking his brothers out and insisting that every little spot or bump on their bodies must be chicken pox too.

The only other real news is that before the rain came pouring down, Jeffrey was able to go pick up a desk from a freecycler, so now we have the small desk we needed. Thanks, freecycle.

Aunt Hedy's socks finished!

I can't show the socks on because my feet are a full 6 shoe sizes smaller than hers, but they're off the needles and in an envelope ready to go to the aunt with the mostest who deserved them long before this. Pattern is Knitty's Lighthouse Gansey socks. I had already ordered the yarn before this pattern was published, so it's just coincidence that they color matches almost exactly. I know my photography is lousy, but I just really wanted to snap a couple of photos to capture that I was finished, and get these ready to mail.

A quick quiet moment

Sorry so quiet today--Gilad has been sick and I've spent the whole day holding him on my lap watching Blue's Clues, Diego, Dora, and PokeMon. I can feel my intellect dribbling out through the holes in my brain...
He fell asleep just when it was time to pick up Addie, so we picked her up, ran back, got him back to sleep, and I ran in here.
Sachy is just walking in from school. I guess I'll get the day's report.

The few minutes I've stolen to knit have gotten me almost to the end of the 40+ row chart on the first of Aunt Hedy's socks! I do like this pattern.

Socks finished

Mom's socks are finished and I've started Aunt Hedy's!

No picks of Mom's both because still no functional digicamera and because (whoo, hoo) the pattern for the socks is my original and it's in the process of being published so I can't show it here before the book comes out!

Aunt Hedy's are coming along--I've just started the chart. I love Louet yarns:
Not so fond of the bamboo needles as always, but that's what I've got in a size 2 so that's what I'm a-using. The color happens to be almost exactly the same as the original in the Knitty pattern, coincidentally--I had bought the yarn even before the pattern came out, so it's just fortuitous. They're going to be gorgeous socks and I hope she'll be happy.

Sorry in advance

In Aunt Hedy's honor because this is the kind of thing she (and Uncle Benny and Uncle Harold) used to tell us (joke shamelessly stolen from AlannaSmithee on LT):

How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on it.
How do you catch a tame rabbit?
Tame way, unique up on it.

Socks!

Okay, still no photos of the work in progress, but I'm coming along on Mom's socks. I'm knitting the foot, and that goes quickly, then I'll be done. I'm actually enjoying them again.

I ordered yarn to make Aunt Hedy's socks, but then I realized that despite what I intended, I ordered 100% wool (Louet from The Loopy Ewe, very nice, but still; she lives in Ft Worth TX). So I either have to also order some polyester doubling thread from Patternworks or somewhere to stabilize the heel and toe and make her cold weather socks she'll love but only be able to wear a few times each year, or order some different yarn (like a bamboo-wool mix) she could wear more often. Decisions, decisions.

I think that since I already ordered the Louet, I'll just go with that in the end.
